President Hashem al-Atasi, elected by a unanimous vote in Parliament in December 1949 to replace the dictatorship of General Husni al-Zaiim. This was the second round for Atasi as president, having served in office in 1936-1939. Standing behind him is Parliament Speaker Rushdi al-Kikhiya
